Honokaa Town and Waipio Lookout

One hour and 15 minutes north of Hilo on HI-19 is the small town of Honokaa. The drive is mostly along the coast and offers spectacular views. The Honokaa Trading and Antiques store is worth a visit. Out on the main road to Waimea is Tex's Drive Inn where they specialize in malasadas, a Portuguese confection. They also serve up a good fish sandwich.

Twenty minutes further on along the coast is the Waipio Valley Lookout but don't try to drive your car down the road - it is incredibly steep. If you want to go into the valley you should hook up with one of the tours that have the vehicles that can handle the 25% grade.

Click on any of the pictures below to enlarge.

It's a short walk to the lookout.

The valley, once home to many Hawaiian Kings, is over 2000 feet below.

The people that live down below are truly off the grid. The road down averages a 25% grade. Yowser!

Honokaa Trading and Antiques - a fun shopping experience

It's like a museum inside.

Keep your eye out - there's usually a cat or two to pet.

Stop at Tex's for lunch and share a malasada for dessert.
