The Painted Churches of the
The Star of the Sea Painted Church is
the nearest to our home and is located in Puna on the Pahoa Kalapana
Road (Hwy 130). It has frescos and stained glass covering the
interior. In 1990 an eruption from Kilauea destroyed Kalapana and
had the little church next in its sites. The people banded together
to move it out of the way just 45 minutes before the old site was
covered by lava. Open daily 9am - 4pm, free.
St. Benedict's Painted Church is
located on the other side of the Island and overlooks Kealakekua Bay
in the Captain Cook area. This also happens to be in the heart of the Kona coffee growing region.
You'll find it just off Highway 11 and Highway 160 at 84-5140
Painted Church Road. While it is an important historical site, it is
still a vibrant parish, with outreach programs to take care of those
in need and to provide medical services to the local community.
