Richardson Beach in Hilo

Hilo has a string of nice beaches. Richardson Beach is protected by a reef making it safe for children and offering opportunities for snorkeling and bobbing in the gentle waves. To find the beaches head into Hilo on the main roads and just pass the airport HI-11 ends. Turn right when you see Ken's House of Pancakes. There are several beaches and parks along the road but my two favorites are Carlsmith (2.7 miles, described here) and Richardson State Park (3.7 miles). On your way out stop at Verna's for a bite.

Just another day in Paradise at Richardson's State Park

Safe for all ages

Beach is protected by a reef.

Good snorkleing here too

Mauna Loa (13,679 feet) on the left and Mauna Kea (13,796 feet) on the right. This is a "Big Island".

Plenty of shade and picnic tables.

Stop at Verna's for a bite to eat. Not sure where the phrase originated but even politicans use it in Hawaii. "If can, can, if no can no can."

Loco Moco - a distinct Hawaii delight.
